In the early 1990s, as Korea began expanding its global presence, art museums were rare outside major cities, and institutions showcasing contemporary art or emerging artists were almost nonexistent. As cultural thirst grew, Daewoo Foundation recognized this gap and took its first step into the Cultural And Artistic Initiatives.

The Foundation began its Cultural And Artistic Initiatives in 1991 by supporting the establishment of the Art Sonje Museum in Gyeongju, inspired by the artistic commitment of Heeja K. Chung former chairperson of Hilton Hotel Korea, and created in memory of the late Sonje Kim. In 1998, the Foundation opened Art Sonje Center in Seoul, supporting young artists and developing it into a multidisciplinary space where contemporary art inspires reflection on life and society.

Daewoo Foundation’s Cultural And Artistic Initiatives begin with artists and extend toward society and local communities. The Foundation collaborates with Daewoo Dream Village and Osong Community Welfare Center to help local youth engage with contemporary art, and is now preparing new public–private partnerships in Wando that integrate healthcare with the arts.
