Strengthening the foundations of scholarship and widening the horizon of knowledge

Academic Initiatives

Supporting fundamental disciplines that have long been under-supported by government and industry, so the ecosystem of knowledge can continue to grow

In the early 1980s, when Korea’s foundational academic fields were still fragile, Daewoo Foundation turned its attention to the future of Korean scholarship. National priorities centered on economic development, leaving overall academic support insufficient.โ€จ Foundational research in the natural sciences and methodological studies in the humanities, philosophy, and history remained especially underdeveloped.

Daewoo Foundation formed the Academic Research Planning Committee, chaired by Professor Cho Soon, to examine the state of Korea’s basic scholarship. From this work, the Foundation launched its academic initiatives with a focus on fundamental fields and the development of emerging researchers. Every stage of the process, from selecting research themes to review and final outcomes, was entrusted entirely to the academic community. The Foundation's Support extended beyond research funding to include symposia, academic gatherings, international exchanges, publishing, and scholarships for doctoral students, shaping a broad and vibrant scholarly ecosystem.

Daewoo Foundation publishes the outcomes of its academic research support through the Daewoo Academia series, and since 2006 has released 'The Horizon of Knowledge' to encourage interdisciplinary exchange. Today, the Foundation explores new approaches that broaden the reach of scholarly work, drawing on the knowledge accumulated within the academic community.

What We Do

We secure foundational texts
that anchor the humanities
and support both
fundamental research and emerging scholars

Academic Research Support

Since 1981, the Daewoo Foundation has supported dissertations, translations, and collaborative studies by doctoral researchers in fundamental disciplines. The program is administered independently through an Academic Advisory Committee composed of external scholars.

Daewoo Academia Series

Research outcomes are published in the Daewoo Academia Series, expanding the scholarly infrastructure and encouraging further study. The series expanded with additions such as the Daewoo Classics in 2001 and the Kyujanggak-Daewoo Series in 2006, establishing itself as a leading scholary collection.

The Horizon of Knowledge

To foster communication among researchers, the Foundation publishes 'The Horizon of Knowledge' twice a year. The publication is a comprehensive academic webzine that crosses disciplinary boundaries, examines contemporary issues in Korea and beyond, and seeks perspectives for understanding the future.

New Approach

Academia × Civic Engagement

Reintroducing Scholary Content

Daewoo Foundation is creating new connections by bringing together its accumulated expertise and resources in response to contemporary social needs.

The newly highlighted issue is the crisis in higher education. Over the past twenty years, the number of doctoral degree holders has tripled. However, advanced knowledge has become concentrated within corporations and established institutions, while pathways for sharing it with the wider public have narrowed. In response, Daewoo Foundation is exploring ways to increase the accessibility and relevance of academic research, building new points of connection with self-directed learners and engaged citizens.
